Organic Seaveg

Organic seaweed production is still a challenge – especially because legislation is not always easy to translate into practice. At the same time, the need is greater than ever: The demand for organic seaweed is increasing – for feed, food products, canteens and meal boxes. But even though a protocol already exists for sugar kelp, there is still a lack of clear guidelines for, among other things, dulse and the production of sugar kelp gametophytes. New organic regulations also require updates to existing frameworks and protocols.

The Organic Seaveg project addresses these exact challenges. The goal is to develop concrete, updated and practical protocols that seaweed producers can implement directly in their operations.

At AlgeCenter Denmark, we already work intensively with the barriers that exist in the industry – and this project is therefore an important step toward a stronger and more sustainable development of organic seaweed production.

The Team behind the project: Susan Løvstad Holdt (DTU Fødevareinstituttet), who leads the project, Annette Bruhn, Teis Boderskov, Sofie Laage Christiansen and Kiara Hoffman (Institut for Ecoscience – Aarhus Universitet), Mette Møller Nielsen (DTU Aqua), Mads Hecter (Kerteminde Seafarm) and Simon Weber (Dansk Tang).

The project is supported by ICROFS – International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems – and GUDP – Grønt Udviklings- & Demonstrationsprogram.
